Categories
One record per organisation, distinguished by category. How categories are assigned and what they change.
Investryx does not keep separate address books for startups, funds and service providers. Every organisation is one record, and a category says what kind of organisation it is. That is what lets the relationship graph, enrichment and contacts work the same way for a law firm as for a seed-stage company.
The taxonomy
| Group | Categories |
|---|---|
| Operating company | Startup, Enterprise |
| Investor & capital | VC, PE, Angel, Family Office, Institutional, Corporate VC |
| Ecosystem | Accelerator, University, Government |
| Service provider | Bank, Legal, Accounting, Consulting, HR, Marketing |
| Other | Nonprofit, Media, Other |
An organisation can belong to more than one category — a fund that is also one of your LPs, for instance — and one of them is the primary category.
What the category changes
- Which list the organisation appears in. Sourcing shows every organisation whose categories include Startup. Network shows all of them, with a Category filter grouped as in the table above, with counts per category.
- The badge shown on rows and at the top of the detail drawer. The primary category is the coloured badge; any secondary categories appear beside it.
- The Overview field set enrichment tries to fill — Total raised and Lead investor for a startup, Assets under mgmt and Mandate for a family office, Practice areas for a law firm.
- Startup-only sections and actions. Signals, Recent funding and Add to pipeline appear only for startups.
Becoming an LP does not change an organisation’s category. The LP roster on Funds points at the same organisation record, so its name, website, contacts and notes live in one place.
How a category is assigned
The category is set when the record is created:
| Created from | Category |
|---|---|
| Sourcing → Add company | Startup |
| Pipeline → New deal → Create new company | Startup |
| Network → Add company | Other |
| Add contact → Create new company, or a CSV import | Other |
Enrichment reads the category to decide which fields to look for; it does not change it. There is currently no control in the drawer for changing or adding categories. If an organisation needs a different category — for example a company added from Network that turns out to be an investment target — send the organisation’s name through the contact form and we will update it for you.
Category versus classification
Do not confuse the category with the three startup classification fields on the Overview: Company sector (the industry served), Tech category (the “X-Tech” label) and Core tech (the enabling technology). Those describe what a startup does, are filled by enrichment and are fully editable. The Sector filter on Sourcing uses the company sector.
